Hi Friends.
I got the pink slip 3 weeks back with one month severance. So my target was to secure the job in one month to avoid loss of pay. Finally secured the job with 3 offers from 3 top companies.
Some tips if it may be helpful to others , that I recently expereinced
1. Read your resume thoroughly and see if there are anything that you can improve and make the resume with the core skills, do not make the resume of mix of different profiles, like dba, architect, project manager, make them all seperate.
2. Try to make the submission to the direct employer or recruiter on top of the chain. You can do that finding contacts on linked in.
3. Do not compromise a lot, this makes these recruiters to think that you are vulnerable for any exploitation, (happened with me, I kicked there butt after getting selected and telling them on why did I do that)

Can I file concurrently I-140 and I-485 if the labor is approved but haven't received the hard copy? What do I need to attach to these applications to substitute for the hard copy?

I'm on H1B and my family members are on H4. I'm still working on H1B and never used EAD/AP.
I would like to renew my EAD/AP which has expired in Oct'08.
My lawyer is charging huge fees and it is turning out to be very expensive to renew EAD and AP for all my family members.
Have anyone renewed EAD and AP after such a long gap of expiry? Will e-filing
help or paper filing is efficient? Any experiences from forum members regarding
this will be appreciated.

Do not fret. Berkeleybee is still around but not as active on the forum because of extreme pressure at work. There are several things that can save you a bit!
You can do balance transfer on your credit cards in US every year for the amount you usually save in a year.
So, say you save 25k in a year, take that much amount in balance transfer on a credit card here for one-time 4% balance transfer fee, transfer it to india and pay it in a year after you saved that much.
You can also take loan on your existing car for close to 5%.
I took HDFC home loan in india, and knocked out close to 25k every year from it by doing the above.

I was under the impression that balance transfer is usually from one credit card debt to another one but I did not know that it works like a cash advance too where you can borrow money. Can I borrow 50k from my CC and payback that amount in 2-3 yrs (with savings) without much interest?thanks again.

I received an approval notification through the CRIS system of USCIS. Almost everyone who I saw got approved got a CPO and welcome message email. Don't know what to make out of it...my lawyer is also mum on the issue.
Here is the content:

WH-4 Form is meant for complaining against employer.
Please search this forum as I had posted this before a couple of times. Dont worry, DOL/USCIS is going gangbusters
after H1B employers. You first threaten sending the link to your employer. Often that works. If they dont budge then
file the WH-4. Unfortunately WH-4 may wreck the H1B petitions/extension of other employees working for that
company(bodyshopper).
WH4 has nothing to do here with this case. WH4 is not panacea for anything to everything.

Yeah I think it makes sense to fill I9 form because that way you make it clear that your intent moving forward is to be on AOS rather than H1. In case you dont do it then you are on dual status with H1 being primary status so in that case it is open to wide interpretation of CIS officers to classify it as out of status or in status.

i have given blood probably 10-12 times.
Red Cross may not have taken you blood for other reasons not because you are an immigrant , one major reason to deny blood donation is travel
outside US to a country that still has widesspread malaria.
India and most Southeast asian coutries among such countries is one such issues.
Please dont spread incorrect information.
I have volunteered in sports event, donated blood, build houses as volunteer and have been part of volunteer trail maintainance.....and i am an immigrant.
This country is one of the most independent and free countries on face of earth.

There are lot of places which will not take blood if you have not stayed here for 5years. It generally takes 5years for any antigens to get out of system. So some places have rule of thumb for 5years. Now when you are immigrant from India, it is taken for granted to question your length of stay.
There are lot of places which will accept blood from everybody for lack of donors and do their own screenings. It depends on funding/urgent need. I am sure there was no intention of denial based on immigration status/race.

You can set up a company in India, while you are on an H1B. Are your clients in the US or India ? India & US have a double taxation treaty. If you get paid in India and keep the funds in India, you dont have to pay US taxes on that income. But you will have to pay taxes in India and report in the US.

I had valid stamp till 2011 but at POE I was given H1b till Nov 2010. My lawer told me that person at POE may have made mistake. My old stamp has validity Nov 2007. So he may have overlooked and give me 3 years stay based on that stamp. ( US consulate didont put dark stamp ( Cancelled without prejuidice ) . It was just marked with pen.
Now my 6th year will expire in Nov 2011. I have I 140 approved. so when I apply for H1b ext in Nov 2010 will I get 3 years or just till Nov 2011 and then again new extention for 3 years ?

You can get 1099 MISC on H1B and also include that in your tax returns. You need to file a separate form though. I have done this before and confirmed with my attny that there should be no issues with that. The only thing that is important is that the income must be of a passive type.
